“I was overseeing Quaker relief programs in Europe after the Second World War. I had called a meeting in Amsterdam of representatives from our relief units scattered across the continent. There was low morale in the scattered units, isolated and lonely and stressed, struggling imperfectly to succor the needy . . . we were a discouraged company. Our contribution was so small and imperfect and the need so great. Suddenly a Dutch Friend burst in, holding aloft a newspaper with a banner headline: “Quakers win Nobel Peace Prize . . . honored for relief service . . . .” Stunned silence . . . silence that quickly became a Quaker Meeting for Worship . . . . There was only a single message, from a young worker in devastated Poland: ‘All I can say is–a little love goes a long way.’”
